There is a significant upward trend in global energy use and projected energy demand.  It is anticipated that meeting this demand will detrimentally affect agriculture, health, climate, water supply, and various other human and environmental factors.  Additionally, anticipated deficiencies in the energy infrastructure and in the specific technologies used to meet energy demand, such as power plants and pipelines, will contribute to the breakdown of energy supply.  Means of mitigating fuel transmission, distribution and transportation of power are being researched and developed.

Research has focused on more effective and efficient methods of mitigating carbon dioxide emissions.  Reducing energy use in power production requires more efficient power plants.  Recommended changes range from utilizing improved technologies to the complete overhaul of specific systems.  Alternative studies have focused on reducing carbon dioxide emissions.  This can be accomplished by substituting renewable energy for fossil fuels.  The most promising technologies for low-carbon emissions include wind, tidal, solar, and biomass; currently, photovoltaic and wind power technologies are most prominently in use.  Reductions in carbon emissions can also be achieved through the use of lower carbon emissions fuels, such as natural gas and hydrogen.  Alternatively, carbon capture and storage can be used in conjunction with fossil-fuel based power plants.
