Emissions information for this region from the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change is currently only available for the United States and Canada.

U.S. GHG emissions increased 16.8% from 1990 to 2007. The primary greenhouse gasses (GHGs) emitted in the United States in 2007 were CO2 (85.7%), CH4 (7.8%), and N2O (4.3%). Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), perfluorocarbons (PFCs) and sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) together accounted for 2.1% of total GHG emissions in 2007. The energy sector accounted for 86.6% of total GHG emissions. Emissions in this sector have increased 18.8% from 1990 levels. Within the sector, the strongest growth occurred in energy and transport industries, which experienced approximately 33% and 28% growth respectively. Energy industries accounted for 39.4% of the sector’s emissions in 2007, and transport accounted for 30.7%. Manufacturing industries contributed 13.8% of the sector’s emissions in the same year. Other sectors significantly contributing to total U.S. GHG emissions in 2007 were: agriculture (5.8%), industrial production (5.0%), and waste (2.3%).

Canada has a similar emissions profile.  In 2007, CO2 was the principal GHG, accounting for 79.0% of total GHG emissions. CH4 and N2O contributed 13.4% and 6.4% respectively. Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), perfluorocarbons (PFCs) and sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) together accounted for 1.2% of total GHG emissions. The energy sector accounted for 82.2% of total GHG emissions. Agriculture and industrial production accounted for 8.0% and 6.9% respectively. Waste contributed 2.9% of total GHG emissions in Canada in 2007.
